The equipment was acquired during the 2025-2026 financial year. The works are intended to prepare for an extension of the line towards the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, to improve passenger and freight transport and support activity at the port of Tanga.
David Kihenzile said the project could also make it easier for visitors arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport for the Africa Cup of Nations to travel by train. Tanga Urban MP Kassimu Mbaraka had asked the government about its plans to improve the line between the port and the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions to increase the volume of freight carried through Tanga.
