Researcher Éden Pereira says the partnership between Russia and the African Union could help strengthen the continent’s place in international relations. The Russia-Africa summit also discussed expanding industrial, energy and logistics projects, as well as increased security cooperation, reports Sputnik Brasil.
For Brazilian researcher Éden Pereira, the partnership between Russia and Africa can broaden cooperation beyond food and fertiliser exchanges to include industry, energy and logistics. He made the case in an interview on Sputnik Brasil’s Mundioka podcast, reported by Téla Nón.
Pereira believes economic challenges are increasingly regional and that Russia and the African Union have an interest in building shared areas of cooperation. He also considers that Moscow wants to strengthen African countries’ place in international politics, particularly within BRICS. African states, in turn, can benefit from dialogue with Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, he says.
The researcher also presents this rapprochement as support for the “neo-decolonisation” of African countries that remain dependent on their former colonial powers for infrastructure and public services. At the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow, participants also agreed to expand cooperation between the African Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organisation and to strengthen coordination at the G20.
The summit ended on 30 October after two days of discussions, with the adoption of a declaration and a cooperation plan through to 2029, according to the decisions of the Russia-Africa summit.
