Imo State police are investigating an operation on 21 October at the Owerri hospital co-founded by Emmanuel Emenike, following allegations of violence against staff and patients. Three employees arrested over waste-related offences have been released, according to police spokesperson Henry Okoye and Premium Times.
Police in Imo State, Nigeria, have opened an investigation into alleged violence during an operation on 21 October at Emenike Hospital, a 40-bed facility co-founded in Owerri by former Nigeria international Emmanuel Emenike, according to Premium Times. Three employees arrested over alleged breaches of waste management regulations have been released.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso had ordered a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the circumstances of the arrests and the role of the officers present. Police have promised disciplinary action if officers acted unlawfully, according to Premium Times.
Emenike claims that armed officers and officials from the local waste management agency mistreated employees and patients before taking away the hospital administrator and cashier. He posted CCTV footage on Instagram that he said documented the operation and called for the hospital’s recordings and registers to be preserved.
The former Super Eagles striker, who won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, says an earlier police operation had taken place on 25 September. Opened in May 2024 and run by AGCare, Emenike Hospital is described by its co-founder as an investment intended to improve access to healthcare in Imo State.
