Nigerian brand Paciencia relies on discipline to grow in fashion

The founder of Paciencia, a Nigerian brand of handmade leather bags, says creativity alone is not enough to build a sustainable fashion business. She calls for greater commercial discipline, financial management and consistency so Nigerian brands can earn customers’ trust and grow, according to Businessday.

Nigerian brand Paciencia, which specialises in handmade leather bags, wants to grow its business by relying on commercial and financial discipline as much as on creativity. Its founder believes that an attractive product is not enough to ensure a fashion company’s long-term viability, according to an opinion piece published by Businessday.

The business leader points out that a bag can attract attention without generating enough sales and that a popular collection may not cover its costs. She calls on fashion entrepreneurs to know their customers, expenses, prices and target market. For Paciencia, understanding buyers’ expectations and being able to make difficult decisions must accompany design work.

The approach aims to turn a brand’s acquired recognition into a profitable and sustainable business. Paciencia’s founder considers that creativity gives a company its identity, while commercial discipline enables it to continue producing and growing, Businessday reports.
