Nigeria's Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, has pledged to preserve the memory of Nigerian soldiers who died during ECOMOG peacekeeping operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Nigeria's Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, has pledged to preserve the memory of Nigerian soldiers who died during ECOMOG peacekeeping operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone. He made the commitment while receiving a delegation of veterans of the West African force in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson.
Christopher Musa said that work to catalogue archives, victims and historical assets linked to ECOMOG would be completed. The head of the delegation, retired General Ohifeme Ejimai, asked the ministry to address gaps in the documentation and consider an annual day of remembrance for the hundreds of Nigerian soldiers who died in operations.
Created in 1990 by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOMOG was a regional peacekeeping and peace-restoring force. The veterans also discussed their initiatives and the situation of Nigerian veterans still alive.
