Nigeria’s Jigawa State has signed a $10 million joint venture with Indian company Srinivasa Farms Private Limited to build a modern hatchery supplying farmers with day-old chicks. Srinivasa Farms will hold 60% of the project and Jigawa 40%, according to a state government statement cited by Punch.

Jigawa State in northern Nigeria has signed a $10 million joint venture agreement with Srinivasa Farms Private Limited, an Indian company, to build a modern poultry hatchery to increase the supply of day-old chicks to farmers, according to a statement by Governor Umar Namadi’s spokesperson. Srinivasa Farms will hold 60% of the project, while the Jigawa government will hold 40%.

The future hatchery is expected to be the first modern facility of its kind in northern Nigeria. The agreement also provides for training for small-scale poultry farmers, technical assistance and support to improve their production and management, according to the Jigawa government. Farmers in the state currently depend on chicks transported from distant regions.

Governor Umar Namadi said the partnership was expected to create opportunities for poultry farmers and contribute to food security. Srinivasa Farms Vice-President Senthil Kumar Krishnan said the project would prioritise rural communities through technical services and the supply of quality products. The agreement is one of five partnerships sought by Jigawa after a visit by its delegation to India.
