Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says he wants to help Phil Foden return to his best form after the Englishman’s Champions League hat-trick and his first league goal in ten months. He believes the 26-year-old midfielder can again become one of England’s best players, according to comments reported by Citizen.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says he wants to help the club’s English attacking midfielder Phil Foden return to his best form after a long spell without scoring. Foden scored in last weekend’s 3-2 win against Ipswich, then netted a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens, Citizen reported.
Maresca said he had spoken to Foden two or three times since taking charge at City in June to remind him of his importance to the team. The 26-year-old Englishman scored 27 goals in the 2023-24 season and won several individual Premier League awards. However, he had gone through a difficult period, publicly referring to mental health problems.
Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches with a new club. Manchester City are due to travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, with Norwegian striker Erling Haaland expected to return. He has scored 12 goals in nine appearances this season and missed the AEK match because of a foot injury.
Foden’s hat-trick against AEK Athens had already been highlighted in an article published on 22 October. The Manchester City midfielder scored the Champions League hat-trick, a result that ended his long goal drought.
