A 57-year-old man was shot dead on Thursday morning outside a polling station in Boikhutso Trust, near Dwarsloop, in Bushbuckridge, in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. Police are investigating the killing, according to Donald Mdhluli, a provincial police spokesperson, quoted by SABC News.
The shooting took place while ballots were being counted inside the station. The victim, who had been wounded by several shots, was taken to hospital before succumbing to his injuries. No suspect had been arrested at the time of the report, and the motive remained unknown, Donald Mdhluli told SABC News.
The case comes during an electoral period marked by several incidents, including the theft of blank ballots from a South African polling station, reported on 4 November. On 26 October, a South African municipal councillor shot dead in the Eastern Cape had also been the subject of a murder investigation.
