South African councillor shot dead in Eastern Cape

Municipal councillor Ernest Fipaza, 63, was shot dead at his home in Bande, near Dutywa, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The South African Communist Party is calling for a swift investigation and sanctions against those responsible, while police are searching for suspects, SABC News reports.

Ernest Fipaza, a 63-year-old Mbhashe municipal councillor, was shot dead at his home in Bande, near Dutywa, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, on Friday night, according to the South African Communist Party (SACP), cited by SABC.

A manhunt has been launched for suspects linked to the killing. Siphelele Mateta, the SACP district chairperson in Ncumisa Kondlo, called on police to act swiftly and on the courts to deny the alleged perpetrators bail before imposing lengthy prison sentences on them.

The communist official also raised concerns about the safety of municipal representatives ahead of the elections. He called for councillors to be able to carry out their mandates in their communities without fearing for their lives.
