A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Siakobvu, Zimbabwe, after his eight-year-old nephew died after being hit with a stick during a homework session. The boy reportedly succumbed to his injuries after struggling to understand the lesson, according to police quoted by 263Chat.

Milder Madyembeu, a 22-year-old man, has been arrested after the death of his eight-year-old nephew, Nico Mujoni, in Siachitondo, Nyaminyami District, Zimbabwe. He allegedly hit the child with a wooden stick during a homework session because the boy did not understand the material being studied, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, according to 263Chat. The child died from his injuries.

The Zimbabwean government bans corporal punishment in schools, but children continue to be seriously injured during punishments at home, reports 263Chat. Earlier in 2026, 28-year-old Takudzwa Wellington Chimutso was sentenced to seven years in prison for the death of his six-year-old niece, whom he had repeatedly beaten during writing and reading lessons.

That earlier case dates back to 19 and 20 January 2026, in Kosvoro village, under Chief Masunda. The girl died at Zvishavane Hospital on 21 January, after Chimutso and a witness first took her to a shrine. The High Court sitting in Gweru sentenced him to nine years, with two years suspended, after recovering a sjambok and wooden sticks used in the beating.
