Comesa calls for industrial waste to create jobs

Officials from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa are calling for industrial waste to be turned into resources and recycling to be developed to create jobs. Comesa secretary-general Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe made the call at the regional summit in Harare, Fingaz reports.

Member states of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) must treat industrial waste as a resource in order to develop recycling and create jobs, officials meeting in Harare said, Fingaz reports. Comesa secretary-general Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe notably stressed that manufacturers discarded much of the material that could be reused.

Officials attending the 25th Comesa summit also noted that Africa accounted for only a small share of global recycling. This approach extends recent calls to accelerate green industrialisation and make the circular economy a driver of African industrialisation, advocated by the Economic Commission for Africa and Comesa on 21 October.
