The Liberian government has handed over 30 pieces of earth-moving equipment to Bong County to rehabilitate rural roads, support agriculture and improve access to essential services. Local authorities will monitor their use, fuel consumption and maintenance from two bases in Salala and Wainsue, The New Dawn reports.

The Liberian government has handed over 30 pieces of earth-moving equipment to Bong County in the centre of the country to improve rural roads and links between farms and markets, The New Dawn reports. Former Defence Minister Brownie Jeffery Samukai, who leads the Special Presidential Project Coordinating Committee, presented the machines to local authorities on Friday 30 October in Salala.

A management system comprising a county coordinator, two assistants and data collectors will monitor the equipment from two centres, in Salala and Wainsue. It will track, among other things, the machines’ movements, fuel consumption, tyre condition and maintenance. Road rehabilitation priorities are to be set with local authorities, elected representatives, traditional leaders and engineers from the Ministry of Public Works.

The official launch of the national Yellow Machines project is scheduled for 16 November, Brownie Samukai said. He asked county authorities to identify priority roads by then so the equipment could be deployed after the launch.

The handover in Bong is part of the nationwide distribution of equipment announced on 30 October, intended to improve farms’ access to markets.
