The Kenya Red Cross has begun distributing humanitarian supplies to 1,000 Ethiopian families who fled fighting in the border town of Moyale. Hundreds of people, mainly women, children and young people, have crossed the border into Kenya since clashes began on Wednesday, according to the Kenya Red Cross and local officials cited by Reuters.
The organisation is setting up temporary shelter and distributing tents, blankets, mats, jerry cans, cooking utensils and fortified flour. It said the displaced people need shelter, food, water and healthcare.
The Kenyan town of Moyale, located opposite an Ethiopian town of the same name, has remained calm, but police were placed on alert after several incidents involving stray bullets. A Kenyan resident wounded in the neck by a bullet was hospitalised and was in a stable condition, according to a police report seen by Reuters. Local officials were due to meet on Friday to coordinate aid for the displaced families.
