Ethiopia’s Megech dam to irrigate 17,000 hectares

Ethiopia has inaugurated the Megech irrigation dam near Gondar, with a storage capacity of 185 million cubic metres and the aim of irrigating more than 17,000 hectares. The project could benefit around 45,000 farming households and enable up to three harvests a year, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Ethiopian News Agency.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the Megech irrigation dam near Gondar, presented as a project designed to store 185 million cubic metres of water and irrigate more than 17,000 hectares. He described its commissioning as a major milestone for the historic city of Gondar and neighbouring communities, according to the Ethiopian News Agency.

The project is expected to benefit around 45,000 farming households. Irrigation could enable them to produce up to three harvests a year and reduce their dependence on seasonal rains, according to estimates reported by the Ethiopian agency.

Abiy Ahmed said that delays and implementation difficulties had been overcome through the government’s philosophy of cooperation, known as “Medemer”. He also attributed the project’s completion to increased monitoring, according to the Ethiopian News Agency.
