Strikes by the Jordanian army in Syria’s Daraa province killed five people, according to Syrian health authorities. Amman says it targeted terrorist groups in retaliation for an attack on a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church, which killed nine people and injured 34, Thechronicle reports.
Jordanian air strikes in Syria’s Daraa province killed five people, including women, children and an elderly man, according to Syrian health authorities cited by state media. The Jordanian army said it had targeted “terrorist” organisations in retaliation for an attack on a Christian funeral.
The attack on the funeral, held on Friday at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, killed nine people and injured 34. Jordan said it had coordinated the strikes with the Syrian government, while Damascus said it had not been notified of the operation carried out on Monday.
Syria suspended passenger and freight traffic at the Nassib border crossing, the only commercial and passenger crossing between the two countries. Syrian authorities said they had opened direct communication channels with Amman and launched an investigation into the strikes. The suspension of traffic was announced in an article on the closure of Nassib, published on 27 October 2026.
Before the strikes, Jordanian security forces arrested two brothers and their brother-in-law, suspected of involvement in the church attack. Jordan’s Interior Ministry said the suspects, all Jordanian, had been hiding in a building near the site of the shooting.
