Johannesburg Water denies messages claiming that all water supplied in Johannesburg is contaminated and unfit for consumption. The municipal operator asks residents not to share these unverified alerts and to report any unusual odour or colour, its spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala told South African public broadcaster SABC.

Johannesburg Water has denied messages claiming that all water distributed in Johannesburg was contaminated and unfit for consumption. The company said no confirmed contamination incident affected the entire city, according to its spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala.

Any health advisories apply only to the neighbourhoods expressly mentioned in the notifications, Johannesburg Water clarified. Residents who notice unusual colour or odour are asked to call 010 061 4470 so that tests can be conducted.

The denial comes as several Johannesburg neighbourhoods have been without water for a week, a situation that has already prompted residents’ protests.
