Statements attributed to Israel recognise Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, two territories at the heart of relations with Morocco. The position, presented as a political shock for Rabat, concerns the territorial status of the two cities, according to the source text provided.

The chargé d’affaires at the Israeli Embassy in Spain, Dana Erlich, said that her country recognised Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish cities located on the northern coast of Africa. She said the Israeli position raised “no doubt” about the authority controlling these territories, according to Spanish media citing her intervention at the Nueva Economía forum.

Dana Erlich also described Spain as an “important ally, historically and for the future”, while presenting Morocco as a “strategic ally”. She recalled that the 2020 Abraham Accords marked a turning point in relations between Israel and Morocco, which reaffirms its own claim to Ceuta and Melilla.
