Nyanga Governor Jean Robert Mabobet has set up a provincial crisis unit in Tchibanga following the sinking of the Prospector 5 drilling platform off Mayumba. The unit is to coordinate efforts to secure the area, assist victims and assess the consequences of the accident, reports the Gabonese Press Agency.

The governor of Gabon’s Nyanga province, Jean Robert Mabobet, met administrative authorities and defence and security forces in Tchibanga on Monday 26 October to set up a provincial crisis unit following the accident involving the Prospector 5 offshore drilling platform off Mayumba, according to the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP).

The unit is to secure and monitor the accident site, organise alert and prevention operations, help investigate the causes of the accident and assess its consequences. It also plans to assist any victims and provide medical and psychological care for those affected, as well as assess their contractual situation.

Technical coordination teams will direct field operations, monitor the impact and development of the accident, and collect data needed to analyse it. They will produce a daily report. The provincial response follows the government’s statement on the sinking, which left one dead and four missing, according to information published on 26 October.
