Four machines allocated to Liberia’s Lofa used elsewhere

Liberia’s presidential committee overseeing the 285 yellow machines programme says four machines allocated to Lofa County are being used in other counties, not lost. Only 26 of the 30 machines announced had been seen in Foya and Voinjama, prompting residents to demand explanations, The Liberian Investigator reports.

Four of the 30 earthmoving machines announced for Lofa County are currently being used in other counties in Liberia, the Special Presidential Project Coordinating Committee, responsible for implementing the government’s 285 yellow machines programme, explained, according to The Liberian Investigator. The explanation came after residents found that only 26 machines were present in the county.

Local records show 15 machines in Lower Lofa, notably in Foya District, and 11 others in Upper Lofa, around Voinjama. The initial announcement of the 30 machines was made on 23 October at a ceremony in Voinjama, where residents hoped they would speed up road rehabilitation and improve access to markets.

S. Daniel Brown Fayaiah, a resident who is asking the committee responsible for the machines to account for their distribution, called for the remaining machines to be provided quickly. Other residents are also demanding explanations about the use of public funds, according to The Liberian Investigator.
