First million Venezuelan barrels arrive in Texas

The first million barrels of oil covered by the agreement reached this year between the United States and Venezuela has arrived in Texas, according to Mercado. The outlet reports that the pact could be undermined by political developments in both countries and by María Corina Machado’s opposition to producer Alejandro Betancourt’s role.

The first million barrels of Venezuelan oil covered by the agreement reached this year between Caracas and Washington arrived in Texas this week, the business news outlet Mercado reports. US President Donald Trump described the shipment as a “gift”.

The agreement could be undermined by political manoeuvring in Venezuela and by elections due in both countries, according to Mercado. The partially US government-owned oil company, led by Venezuelan entrepreneur Alejandro Betancourt, is increasing its production.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado called for elections on Thursday in her first speech since returning from exile. She also said Alejandro Betancourt was not a viable partner, Mercado reports.

Donald Trump announced the arrival of the shipment on 28 October, as part of the oil agreement between the United States and Venezuela.
