Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez hopes to return earlier than expected after a broken jaw that required surgery. A protective mask could help speed his return, according to Sky Sports, while the club are relying on Mike Penders during his absence.

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez hopes to return sooner than expected after suffering a broken jaw, according to Sky Sports, cited by Vanguard. The Argentina international has consulted a specialist about wearing a protective mask during his recovery.

Martínez underwent surgery after being injured during Chelsea’s away game against Everton earlier in October. The initial estimate was that he would be out for a few weeks. In his absence, manager Xabi Alonso is relying on 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders, who notably scored an own goal on his first Premier League start against Tottenham.

Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday before travelling to Sunderland ahead of the international break. Defender Maxence Lacroix also suffered a hamstring injury on Wednesday against Liverpool. Alonso said it was too early to assess the severity of the injury. Several other players, including João Pedro and Reece James, are also unavailable or not fully fit.

Chelsea are also without João Pedro, who was reported to be out for several weeks on 27 October (João Pedro’s absence).
