The management of Domingos Ramos Secondary School in Praia is asking Cape Verde’s Ministry of Education for more staff to supervise its more than 4,000 pupils. The request follows a pupil’s accidental injury and the intrusion of a teenager pursued after an attempted robbery, according to a statement from the school.

The management of Grouping VI, which includes Domingos Ramos Secondary School in Praia, asked Cape Verde’s Ministry of Education on 5 November for an urgent increase in staffing to supervise more than 4,000 pupils. It considers that the current staff cannot properly ensure security, organisation and services for the school community, according to Expresso das Ilhas.

The request comes after two incidents. On 23 October, a pupil was injured while pupils and friends from the 11th and 12th years were irresponsibly handling a bladed weapon; he has since returned to classes. On 3 November, a teenager from outside the school entered the secondary school to take refuge in the teachers’ room while being pursued by individuals linked to an attempted robbery, a case being followed by the police.

The management wants to strengthen security at the buildings, entrances and neighbouring areas with the relevant authorities. It is calling on parents, pupils, teachers and staff to respect school rules and discipline, according to the statement reported by Expresso das Ilhas.
