Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has revived controversy over a phrase attributed to Louis Rwagasore, Burundi’s independence hero. Historians say Rwagasore was advocating economic partnerships for the country, rather than leniency towards the colonisers.

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has reopened debate over the interpretation of a statement made by Prince Louis Rwagasore after Uprona’s victory in the 1961 legislative elections. “You will judge us by our actions, and your satisfaction will be our pride” expressed, according to the head of state, Rwagasore’s desire to work for the Belgians. Évariste Ndayishimiye spoke on 31 July in Gitega.

The statement came during a political dialogue held ahead of Burundi’s 2027 presidential election. The meeting brought together representatives of around 30 political parties, provincial governors and members of the Independent National Electoral Commission, which is responsible for organising elections. The president also presented an assessment of his government’s progress, although no details were given.
