Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye accuses Rwanda of training, supporting and funding the Resistance for a State of Law in Burundi (RED-Tabara), a Burundian armed group active in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He reiterated this position in an interview broadcast in early August 2026 by BBC News Gahuza.
The first traces of RED-Tabara date back to 2011, but the movement took its current form after Burundi’s political crisis and the attempted coup in 2015, according to BBC News Gahuza. The Burundian government has defended this accusation against Kigali for several years.
