Mexican boxer Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez beat Frenchman Christian Mbilli on points by unanimous decision in Riyadh and reclaimed the WBC super-middleweight title, according to Agence France-Presse. The fight took place on Saturday night into Sunday and handed Mbilli his first professional defeat.
Álvarez has won 64 fights in his career, with three defeats and two draws. He said after the fight that the victory and his new title, won more than 15 years after his first, were “simply incredible”, AFP reported.
Over 12 rounds, Mbilli landed 324 punches, 91 of which found their target, compared with 186 punches from Álvarez, 132 of them effective. Mbilli, who was born in Yaoundé, had regained the WBC title in January after American Terence Crawford retired; he must now relinquish it.
