The speaker of Benin's National Assembly, Joseph Djogbénou, visited former president Nicéphore Soglo at his home in Cotonou to seek his advice. A meeting with no announcement or decision, held as a tribute to the father of democratic renewal.

The speaker of Benin's National Assembly, Joseph Fifamin Djogbénou, paid a courtesy visit to former president Nicéphore Dieudonné Soglo on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at his private home in La Haie-vive, Cotonou, La Nouvelle Tribune reports. The head of Parliament, surrounded by members of his cabinet and MP Joël Godonou, came to seek the advice of the leading figure of Beninese political life.

According to Joseph Djogbénou, the National Assembly's term is placed under the blessing of Nicéphore Soglo, the first president of the Republic of the democratic renewal era, for what he represents for Benin and for present and future generations. The current speaker of Parliament said he was delighted by the former head of state's advice and pleased to see him in perfect health.

Nicéphore Soglo, now in his nineties, for his part said he was proud of Joseph Djogbénou, describing as "anthological" his opening speech to the National Assembly's second ordinary session, an address covering the country's entire socio-economic and political life.
