Cape Verde’s Institute of Cultural Heritage (IPC) has documented the wreck of the Col Blum, a ship that sank in 1848 off Porto de Santa Maria, on the island of Sal. An archaeological survey and reconnaissance mission took place from 20 to 23 October, according to the IPC, cited by Expresso das Ilhas.
The work involved recording the site and gathering data on its characteristics to assess its historical and heritage value. The team, made up entirely of Cape Verdeans, consisted of IPC technicians coordinated by archaeologist Jaylson Monteiro, with conservator José Lima also taking part.
The IPC said the information gathered would help prepare future study, monitoring and preservation work. It should also contribute to a better understanding and protection of the remains of the archipelago’s maritime history.
