Wayne Rooney called Manchester United players selfish and childish after the heavy 4-1 defeat by Como and Bruno Fernandes’s criticism of Michael Carrick. The former club captain said he was shocked by the performance and condemned internal tensions, according to Reuters.
Wayne Rooney, Manchester United’s former striker and all-time leading goalscorer, called the current players at the English club “babies” and “selfish”. He criticised them for shifting responsibility for the crisis onto manager Michael Carrick after the 4-1 defeat by Como in the Champions League, according to comments he made on The United Stand podcast on Thursday.
Rooney said he believed the players cared neither about their teammates, nor their manager, nor the staff, nor the supporters. He also said that defender Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of the club’s management and captain Bruno Fernandes’s criticism of Carrick’s tactical choices risked “tearing the dressing room apart”.
Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s home match against Bournemouth and could drop into the relegation zone if results go against them. Rooney said he had been “in shock” and “in disbelief” at the performance in Como, which weakened Carrick’s position.
The comments came the day after Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick, on 22 October following Manchester United’s defeat by Como. They come amid a crisis already marked by questions over Carrick’s future and the club’s defensive record, having kept just one clean sheet in 10 matches as of 20 October.
