Uganda’s Local Government Minister, Balaam Barugahara, has referred 16 officials from Rubanda district to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit over suspected financial losses to the state. The move follows an inspection of public projects, including a bridge built for 85 million Ugandan shillings that the minister found concerning, reports Nile Post.
Uganda’s Minister of Local Government, Balaam Barugahara, has referred 16 Rubanda district officials to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit for an investigation into possible losses of public funds. The referral follows an inspection of state-funded projects in the Kigezi sub-region, reports Nile Post.
In Kakore, the minister noted cracks in the concrete and poorly bonded stones on Bugiri Bridge, whose construction reportedly cost 85 million Ugandan shillings. He also pointed to soil deposits in the drainage channel and questioned the structure’s ability to withstand heavy rain. The inspection also covered Karukara Market and Rubanda General Hospital.
The referral opens an investigation but does not constitute proof that the officials caused a loss or committed an offence. Finance Minister Henry Musasizi welcomed the initiative and called for stronger oversight of public spending. Barugahara is due to continue his anti-corruption tour in the districts of Kanungu and Rukungiri the following week.
