Spain’s Higher Sports Council has referred LaLiga president Javier Tebas to the Administrative Court of Sport after he compared Real Madrid’s communication methods to Nazi propaganda. The court must determine whether the comments breached Spanish rules on sporting dignity and decorum; the process could lead to a warning, fine or suspension, according to Reuters.

Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD) has referred LaLiga president Javier Tebas to the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) to examine his remarks comparing Real Madrid’s communications with Nazi propaganda methods. The referral, announced on Thursday, is intended to determine whether the comments undermined sporting dignity and decorum, according to Reuters.

Tebas published the remarks on 16 October, criticising the way Real Madrid challenges Spanish refereeing and uses its television channel to comment on decisions involving referees. The Madrid club subsequently demanded the immediate resignation of the 64-year-old executive. Tebas says he was referring to propaganda techniques, not Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.

The CSD has asked the court to assess whether there was a serious breach under Article 76.4.b of Spain’s 1990 Sports Act. The possible penalties range from a warning to a fine or suspension, but no offence has been established against Javier Tebas at this stage. The executive defended his comments on X on Thursday and said that Real Madrid’s repeated allegations about the integrity of Spanish football could also be examined under the rules on sporting dignity, AFP reports.

The referral comes on the same day that Javier Tebas was already the subject of an investigation, according to a report published on 22 October. It extends the controversy sparked by his remarks about Real Madrid and its handling of disputes over refereeing.
