An ambush near Bitale, in South Kivu, killed three travellers, including Laurent Vainqueur Muliro, a journalist with Walikale Amka Community Radio, and seriously injured two others. The convoy was travelling between Bukavu and Walikale after the Goma-Walikale road was closed, according to Actualité.cd.
Journalist Laurent Vainqueur Muliro of Walikale Amka Community Radio (RTCWA) and two other travellers were killed on Wednesday evening in an ambush near Bitale, in Kalehe territory, South Kivu. Two people were also seriously injured and the attackers looted the convoy’s belongings, according to survivors cited by Actualité.cd.
The victims were travelling in a convoy of around ten motorbikes between Goma and Walikale via the Bukavu-Hombo route. As the direct Goma-Walikale road was closed by rebels from the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), the passengers had taken this alternative route, despite the presence of wazalendo militiamen in the area.
Laurent Vainqueur Muliro was shot in the head. The other two victims were a student travelling to Kisangani after universities in Goma closed, and a motorcycle taxi driver. The three bodies were transferred to the mortuary at Hombo Sud Hospital, where the two injured people, whose condition was considered critical, were admitted for treatment, according to local sources cited by Actualité.cd.
