Marampa Mines plans to temporarily suspend its operations in Sierra Leone because of rising transport and operating costs, as well as difficult market conditions. The company will retain a minimum team and essential services to protect its licence and enable production to resume, Sierraloaded reports.

Marampa Mines, a mining company operating the Marampa iron ore deposit in Sierra Leone, has announced a temporary suspension of its activities due to difficult market conditions, high freight and operating costs, and ongoing operational problems. The company notified the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources as part of its restructuring, named “Marampa Reset”, it said on 22 October 2026.

During the suspension, Marampa Mines will retain a minimum team to protect its mining licence, maintain essential services and secure its assets. Security, essential power supplies, tailings and water management, environmental protection and necessary maintenance will continue so that operations can resume when market conditions are more favourable.

The company is preparing a plan detailing the safe shutdown of the site, the activities to be maintained and the staffing required. It also said that rising fuel prices had limited its supplies and forced it to preserve stocks for essential services. The timetable for changes to production will depend on regulatory requirements and the site’s readiness, while restructuring will continue at every level of the company.
