Algerian students who graduate in France must obtain a change of status and a suitable residence certificate to work there on a long-term basis, according to Observ’Algérie. Their access to salaried employment is mainly governed by the Franco-Algerian agreement of 27 December 1968, which provides for procedures distinct from those applicable to other foreign students.

The employer must apply for work authorisation before the activity begins. To obtain a residence certificate bearing the designation « salarié », the applicant must notably present a contract approved by the relevant services. A certificate bearing the designation « travailleur temporaire » may be issued for temporary work, under the conditions set out in the agreement, Observ’Algérie reports.

The application to change status may include a passport, student residence certificate, diploma, employment contract, proof of work authorisation and proof of address. The documents required vary according to the circumstances and the instructions of the prefecture, the media outlet explains, referring to Service-Public.

During their studies, holders of a student residence certificate may work up to the equivalent of half-time over the year, in their field or profession and with the required authorisation, Observ’Algérie reports.
