The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps arrested 27-year-old Yusuf Abdulrazaq in Kano for allegedly impersonating a civil defence officer. Investigators accuse him of using stolen-phone tracking to extort residents, reports Punch, citing the regional command.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested Yusuf Abdulrazaq, a 27-year-old man, in Kano for allegedly impersonating an officer of the organisation. He was reportedly arrested in Rimin Auzinawa, in Ungogo Local Government Area, while presenting himself as a first-level Assistant Superintendent of Corps, a rank equivalent to a two-star officer, according to Punch, citing Kano command spokesman Ibrahim Abdullahi.
Initial investigations accuse him of using the tracking of stolen phones to extort money from individuals. Yusuf Abdulrazaq is being held pending further investigation and possible legal proceedings, the NSCDC said.
The NSCDC commander in Kano, Mohammed Agalama, urged the public to verify the identities of people presenting themselves as members of the corps, particularly when they demand money. The command also called for suspicious activities to be reported, reports Punch.
The arrest follows that of a senior official of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps in Abuja, announced on 28 October. The NSCDC was then mentioned in a case involving gunfire in the federal capital.
