Niger’s military regime, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, accuses France of fomenting the attempted coup that took place in Niamey on the night of 28 to 29 August 2026. Paris firmly rejects the accusations and calls them “pure fantasy”, according to the Nigerien and French authorities.

The mutiny reportedly involved members of the Special Intelligence Battalion at Base 101, among others, before being foiled with Russian support. The Nigerien government says the operation had “international ramifications” and threatens to take legal action. The attempted coup in Niamey had already led to gunfire in the capital.
