The Catholic Archdiocese of New York will pay more than $800 million to settle claims by about 1,300 people who suffered sexual abuse by members of the clergy. Archbishop Ronald Hicks announced on Saturday that the agreement would be formally signed on 6 November, Al Jazeera reports.
Each victim is expected to receive at least $250,000, and potentially more depending on the severity of the abuse, according to the New York Times, which revealed the agreement. Lawyer Jeff Anderson, who represents claimants, welcomed it as a step towards justice and accountability for the Church.
It is the second-largest settlement of its kind, after the $880 million agreement reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024. In June, the Archdiocese of San Francisco announced a $395 million settlement involving about 530 victims.
