The Kenyan Coalition of Human Rights Defenders plans a peaceful march against higher fuel prices and their impact on the cost of living. Between 500 and 900 people are due to walk from Kimathi Street to Nairobi’s State House on 26 October, Kenyans reports.
The Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, a Kenyan human rights coalition, has announced a peaceful march against rising fuel prices in Nairobi on Monday 26 October 2026. Organisers notified police in a letter received on 22 October, Kenyans reports.
The procession is due to start on Kimathi Street, in the central business district, and proceed to State House, the official residence of the president. The coalition expects between 500 and 900 participants and has pledged to maintain order and respect the public’s rights.
The price increase follows the new prices announced by Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority for October and November. In Nairobi, petrol costs 226.96 Kenyan shillings per litre, diesel 227.76 shillings and kerosene 219.87 shillings. Motorists, public transport operators and ride-hailing drivers have criticised the pressure on households and business costs.
Protests against the increase had already taken place on Kimathi Street on 20 October. Citizen TV journalist Odee Francis was briefly arrested by police while covering the gathering. The chairman of the matatu owners’ association, Albert Karakacha, meanwhile dismissed the possibility of a sector strike.
