Lesotho’s opposition parties have petitioned the Southern African Development Community, accusing the government of failing to comply with binding court decisions. They condemn this approach as the authorities pursue constitutional reforms, according to The Lesotho Times, which also reports an opposition boycott of the reforms.
Lesotho’s opposition parties have petitioned the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional organisation, accusing the government of systematically failing to comply with binding court decisions and weakening the rule of law. The petition was addressed to Elias Magosi, SADC executive secretary, by Mathibeli Mokhothu, leader of the opposition in Parliament, according to *The Lesotho Times*.
The opposition believes that this persistent disregard for judicial decisions has eroded the constitutional principles that the ongoing constitutional reforms are supposed to strengthen. It is boycotting these reforms, while the petition was filed before an initiative involving Prime Minister Sam Matekane, who is already the subject of contempt of court proceedings according to a previous article on Sam Matekane. This move comes as opposition parties are calling on SADC to examine compliance with the constitutional order in Lesotho.
