Former Gambian vice-president Isatou Touray has filed her independent candidacy for the 5 December presidential election, challenging her former superior Adama Barrow. She stands by her record in government and criticises the abandonment of the promise of a three-year transition, Kerr Fatou reports.
Former Gambian vice-president Isatou Touray submitted her independent candidacy for the 5 December presidential election on Wednesday, entering the race against President Adama Barrow, Kerr Fatou reports. She submitted her documents to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and said she intended to draw on her government experience while acknowledging her failures.
Isatou Touray criticised the abandonment of the promise made by the opposition coalition in 2016 to limit the presidential transition to three years and carry out constitutional and institutional reforms. She also said that rural families’ economic difficulties should be assessed through their living conditions rather than official indicators alone, according to Kerr Fatou.
Her candidacy comes as 25 hopefuls prepare for the Gambian presidential election. It also comes two days after Bensouda’s coalition promised to resist its exclusion from the presidential race, in a campaign marked by several opposition candidacies.
