Six people, including the pilot, died when a helicopter travelling from Badrinath to Dehradun crashed in India’s Uttarakhand state. The aircraft lost communications over the Joshimath valley and operator Trans Bharat Aviation’s fleet was grounded, Reuters reports.

A helicopter crash killed six people on Friday in India’s Himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Five passengers and the pilot died aboard the aircraft, which was travelling from Badrinath, an important Hindu pilgrimage site, to Dehradun, according to the ANI news agency, citing Prateek Jain, director general of the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA).

The helicopter lost communications while flying over the Joshimath valley, and its tracking system could no longer locate it, UCADA said in a statement. The entire fleet of Trans Bharat Aviation, the aircraft’s operator, was grounded as a precaution.

District authorities, disaster management teams and military personnel took part in search and rescue operations, according to Reuters.
