Hundreds of people attended the funeral of South African environmentalist Desmond D'Sa in Wentworth, in the suburbs of Durban, reports South African outlet IOL. Desmond D'Sa, his son Rodney D'Sa and his sister-in-law Patsy Bishop died in a car accident last Thursday.
"This is a very sad day for the environmental community," said Narend Singh, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, after the ceremony. "I worked with Desmond for more than thirty years," he added, hoping that the SDCEA, the environmental advocacy organisation he led, would carry on its work.
John Peter Narainsamy, chairman of the KZN Subsistence Fishing Forum, the KwaZulu-Natal subsistence fishers' forum, paid tribute to a man who "fought for poor and vulnerable fishers". According to him, Desmond D'Sa obtained free permits for subsistence fishers from the fisheries department and campaigned for a review of catch quotas, so that these families could live from their fishing.
