Egyptian MP sees BRICS as economic leverage

Egyptian MP Farag Fathi Farag believes that the country’s participation in the BRICS group could open up new prospects for economic cooperation. He specifically mentioned President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi’s attendance at the group’s 18th summit, held in New Delhi, according to Egyptian daily Al-Youm al-Sabea.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi’s participation in the 18th BRICS summit, a group of emerging powers, in New Delhi offers Egypt political and economic leverage, Egyptian MP Farag Fathi Farag believes. He also says the country’s presence reflects its growing role in discussions on the reshaping of the global order.

The MP, a member of Egypt’s House of Representatives, considers the BRICS summit an illustration of Cairo’s ability to maintain balanced relations with the various international powers. According to Farag Fathi Farag, this strategy would give it greater room for manoeuvre in defending its national interests as the balance of power shifts rapidly.
