Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi says Egypt is ready to defend Saudi Arabia if Riyadh asks it to do so, amid Houthi attacks on the kingdom. Any deployment of Egyptian forces would require parliamentary approval, the president said at a military academy ceremony, Vanguard reports.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi said on Saturday that Egypt was ready to defend Saudi Arabia if Riyadh asked it to do so, as fighting intensifies between the kingdom and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. During a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian military academy, he nevertheless said that his country did not seek to play a role in regional conflicts.

Since the war in Yemen resumed in July, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi targets, including energy facilities and Riyadh International Airport. An attack on the airport killed 13 people in the week before his statement. The Houthis have also blocked the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while Iran is imposing its own blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.
