The Egyptian Football Association denied on Saturday 7 November that coach Hossam Hassan had been sacked, saying the stability of the Pharaohs remained its priority ahead of two matches against Malawi in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Egyptian media had nevertheless reported that the federation had set these matches as the staff's final assignments, following controversy over the coach's private life.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) denied on Saturday 7 November 2026 reports announcing the sacking of coach Hossam Hassan, days before the double-header against Malawi in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The EFA called for calm and unity, saying the stability of the national team remained its priority, according to The Maravi Post.
Hossam Hassan also rejected speculation about his departure and said he remained committed to his duties as Egypt coach. The Pharaohs are due to host Malawi on 13 November at Cairo International Stadium before travelling to Bingu National Stadium in Malawi on 17 November. Egypt have four points and are top of Group B, while Malawi are third with three points, according to The Maravi Post.
Hossam Hassan will nevertheless be unable to manage the team from the touchline in either match. FIFA has handed him a three-match suspension following his conduct during Egypt's elimination in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Argentina, according to The Maravi Post.
The federation's denial came on 7 November, the same day an article announcing Hossam Hassan's sacking and the appointment of Ali Maher was also published.
