South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne were reprimanded by the International Cricket Federation for challenging an umpiring decision during the third Test against Australia. Each also received one demerit point; Reuters reports that the incident occurred during the match won by South Africa, already covered in our series coverage.
South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne were reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for challenging an umpiring decision during the third Test against Australia at Newlands. Each received one demerit point for breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC code of conduct, according to Reuters.
Marques Ackerman had asked for a catch decision to be reviewed, but umpires Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough ruled that the prescribed 15-second time limit had expired. Ashwell Prince protested to the umpires, while Kyle Verreynne, who was not playing but was acting as the 12th man, asked Ackerman to remain on the field, delaying his departure.
South Africa won the Test by 176 runs and the series 2-1. It thereby moved to the top of the world Test rankings. Four demerit points accumulated over a 24-month period result in a suspension for a player or official, according to ICC rules.
The sanction comes after South Africa's 176-run victory over Australia, announced on 31 October at the end of the third Test played in Cape Town.
