Benin is taking part in the multinational Grand African Nemo 2026 exercise, focused on responding to maritime crises in the Gulf of Guinea. Its oil-pollution response phase is scheduled for 2 to 4 November, according to the programme presented by Lieutenant Commander Régis Agossou.
Exercises off Benin are taking place between Ouidah and Sèmè-Podji. They involve naval and air assets, signal stations and laboratories to test information-sharing and coordination between government agencies. A mock trial is also due to be held on 5 November to assess the judicial handling of maritime offences. Operations, launched in Cotonou on 28 October, are due to end on 6 November.
The exercise is part of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct, adopted in 2013 to support regional cooperation on maritime security. It follows the announcement of training by the Beninese navy with the French helicopter carrier Le Mistral, published on 16 October 2026.
