Carlos Alcaraz reached the last 16 of the Paris Masters 1000 by beating American Alex Michelsen 7-6, 6-3. New world number one Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic were eliminated in their opening matches, Punch reports from the tournament in Nanterre, France.

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz qualified for the last 16 of the Paris Masters 1000 by beating American Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 on Wednesday 4 November, Punch reports. The seven-time Grand Slam winner avoided the first-round elimination that notably affected Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.

New German world number one Alexander Zverev was beaten by Italian Lorenzo Musetti, ranked 24th, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2. Zverev, who won the French Open and US Open this year, said he was « annoyed » at having to justify his position as world number one. Novak Djokovic, 39, meanwhile lost to Australian Rinky Hijikata, ranked 83rd, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, ending his hopes of winning an eighth Paris Masters title and qualifying for the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz’s qualification came three days after his victory over Alex de Minaur in the final of the Vienna tournament on 1 November. His next round in Paris takes place at a tournament where Djokovic was eliminated on the same day.
