UN launches RESIslands to boost climate preparedness in São Tomé and Príncipe

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa has launched the RESIslands initiative in São Tomé and Príncipe to strengthen climate risk assessment and investment preparedness in nine African island countries. The programme, funded by the Green Climate Fund and planned to run for 30 months, will support national capacities in São Tomé and Príncipe, according to the institution cited by Lusa.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has launched the RESIslands initiative in São Tomé and Príncipe to strengthen climate risk assessment and preparation for climate-related investments. The project covers nine member countries of the Commission on Climate Change of African Small Island States, according to an ECA statement sent to Lusa.

Funded by the Green Climate Fund and implemented by the ECA, the initiative is set to run for 30 months. In São Tomé and Príncipe, it will support improvements to climate data and the preparation of investment proposals that match national priorities. ECA programme management officer Kjartan Fjeldsted said the aim was to turn these priorities into concrete actions and investments.

The programme follows its launch in Guinea-Bissau. The nine countries involved also include Cabo Verde and Equatorial Guinea. In São Tomé and Príncipe, the work is expected to help protect agriculture, fisheries and sustainable tourism, as well as communities and essential services, the ECA said.
