Twenty-four Nigerian states have approved the creation of state police, meeting the constitutional threshold required for the bill to take effect. Twelve other states have yet to decide, the Daily Post reports.
The initiative aims to give the federated states their own police forces to tackle insecurity, alongside the federal police. Reaching the threshold of 24 approvals now clears the way for the legislative process to continue, while votes from the remaining 12 states are still awaited.
The announcement came on 23 October, after the approval threshold of 24 Nigerian assemblies was reported to have been reached on the same day. The reform authorising state police had already been presented as the necessary step before the measure could be adopted.
