Guinea-Bissau’s Gabú region began the 2026-2027 school year with a teacher shortage, limiting classes to the sector headquarters. Its regional education director, Serifo Mané, estimates that 300 additional teachers are needed and also reports 453 teachers awaiting confirmation of their permanent status, ANG reports.
The new 2026-2027 school year began with a shortage of 300 teachers in Guinea-Bissau’s Gabú region, regional education services director Serifo Mané said, quoted by the Guinea News Agency (ANG). Classes began only in the administrative centres of the region’s sectors.
The regional education services also identified private schools that do not meet operating requirements or do not have a licence issued by the Ministry of Education. Serifo Mané said the operation was intended to improve the quality of education and put an end to non-compliant establishments, according to ANG. The shortage is in line with the difficulties reported by SINDPROF, Guinea-Bissau’s teachers’ union.
